Surveys and Legalities?

I may be looking a little deeper into this than I should, but I want to make sure I'm doing it RIGHT!

As far as parent and teacher surveys are concerned. Are there certain things we can't ask? If it is an anonymous survey, can I ask what the family household income is? Or should I just use the economically disadvantaged numbers that we already have, and leave that question alone????

I've been reading thru a few blogs tonight, and we all talk about our 'surveys' that we are going to implement. But not a soul has mentioned what he/she is going to include in these surveys.

SUGGESTIONS? GUIDANCE? HELP?

  1. Amy, my principal asked me to contact PRE...just to be safe. I know with all these liabilities that we have know days it's better to be safe than sorry.

  2. Amy,

I am not sure exactly what you can ask on the survey but I suggest that you contact someone if your district's legal department. Most districts have an attorney who is able to review items and determine what you can an cannot do. I am curious to know what you find out.

  3. Amy,
I do not have a suggestion on that, other that what Sylvia and John said: be safe and consult your legal department.
I do want to say that I am excited about your Action Research plan. Just yesterday in the meeting with my site supervisor, she brought up that concern. African American male population is an issue in our campus too. We will benefit from your research ;) Good luck!

  4. Wow - what a great Blog site. I have really struggled with what to put on mine and have kept it pretty much to the assigned postings. I am so glad to have seen yours and seeing how a blog can be used - I will strive to do more now!

As far as your question goes, it is all up to each district on their policies. Please post your results of that inquiry I am interested in knowing what is said and if they provide just the 'legal' answer or the district's 'policy' answer.
